"I want you to know MPD has received notification that the FBI has launched an investigation," Godwin said with no further comment. Bartlett Police Chief Gary Rikard said his department was notified Tuesday that the FBI was investigating the shooting. Rikard declined any further comment other than to say his department would cooperate fully with the investigation. Rikard said recently that officer Patrick Cici has returned to duty with the narcotics division and has been cleared of any departmental violations. Memphis homicide detectives and the District Attorney General's Office already had determined they would not pursue criminal charges against the detective, saying he acted in self-defense. Cici was part of a narcotics team that went to Malcolm Shaw's house with a search warrant in the midmorning hours of March 11 to look for marijuana, drugs or drug paraphernalia. Details from a confidential informant led Bartlett officers to the residence at 1346 Standridge. Bartlett police said officers knocked on the door and identified themselves twice before forcing their way in. Officers said Cici shot Shaw as Shaw came out of a back room. Rikard issued a letter with the department's internal investigation report stating that Shaw "did aggressively approach Detective Cici, while pointing a handgun at Detective Cici. One round was fired by Detective Cici, thus ending the threat to him and his team." An autopsy report by the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office showed Shaw died from a single gunshot wound to his chest. Toxicology reports indicated cocaine and marijuana were in Shaw's system when he was shot. A 9mm handgun was recovered from the scene. Documents from the internal investigation state Cici fired his Sig Sauer .357-caliber handgun eight to 10 feet from Shaw. - --- MAP posted-by: Keith Brilhart
