Police say they rushed to a rural property on Hwy. 3/93 at 9:34 a.m. after someone who lives on the property called 911. They found one person dead and another critically injured, said Cranbrook RCMP Cpl. Chris Faulkner. The male was transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries later in the day and was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. The two victims are identified as 43-year-old Leanne Laura MacFarlane and 42-year-old Jeffrey Todd Taylor "Not much is known at this point, but it appears the attack was targeted," Faulkner said. Police have been at the property in the past while investigating a shooting outside Cranbrook's Sam Steele Inn in October, 2009, they say. Three men were charged with attempted murder after several shots were fired near the hotel and one man was hit. Police believe the incident was related to drugs, and their investigation focused on the property where Saturday's shooting happened. A search of a vehicle on the property in October revealed a 9-mm Glock handgun. Drugs and cash were found inside the home. At the time, police said they feared retaliation from the main players in the case, who are known members of the local drug trade in Cranbrook. No one has been arrested in Saturday's shooting. An emergency dispatch said police are on the hunt for a short man in his 30s who fled on foot after the attack. Faulkner said the home invasion does not appear to be random, and that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. Neighbours in the area said they heard sirens Saturday. Many were surprised to hear about violence so close to home, but said they knew there had been "trouble" at the property in the past.
