WE KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR PANDORA CAMPERS

I have been involved in this work for more than 15 years. I
understand the issues around the Pandora campers from all points of view.

I am wondering if people have forgotten that over the years our
elected officials have travelled to see models that work for such a
multi-faceted population with a very diverse set of needs.

Representatives travelled to Europe to investigate safe consumption
sites. They toured several, many of which were located in cities'
"financial areas." Examples included consumption sites that had
shelter beds attached, as well as medical services (including detox);
some even had secondary housing and job training.

Upon their return, presentations were made throughout the community
displaying their findings and recommendations.

Officials have also travelled to view successful housing models. One
of the most successful is in Portland, Ore.

I believe we know what would work and more important, what doesn't
(one size fits all models).

It would be nice to see funds that are constantly used for more
research and consultations put toward implementing these direct,
harm-reducing and client-centred successful services now.
