SHOOTOUTS CONTINUE IN TAMAULIPAS

The violence of last weekend has calmed somewhat, but sources reported
gunfire over the last day and a half in both Matamoros and Valle Hermoso.

And in Ciudad Victoria, a gruesome discovery was made at the
university.

On Tuesday evening, armed civilians and the Mexican military clashed
in Matamoros along the highway Sendero Nacional, according to a law
enforcement official.

Details of the fighting were not available, but Matamoros residents
reported hearing gunfire and several loud explosions, possibly from
grenades.

On Wednesday morning, residents of Valle Hermoso, a city located 30
miles south of Matamoros, reported a shootout and blockades throughout
the city.

A gun battle between members of organized crime and the Mexican
military reportedly took place over a span of two hours. Additional
information was not available. One source said that classes at local
schools had been suspended until further notice.

On Wednesday afternoon, a brief shootout between gunmen occurred in
Las Arboledas neighborhood, the source stated.

In Matamoros, Mexican marines conducted a raid at a house in the
downtown area, the law enforcement official said. He said that no
shots were fired during the operation. Further details were not available.

In Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas, sources stated that a
human head had been dropped off at the campus of the Tamaulipas State
University. No other details were available.
