MEDICAL MARIJUANA MORATORIUM GETS EXTENSION IN FRANKENMUTH

FRANKENMUTH -- City council members in Frankenmuth have decided to
extend a moratorium on the "cultivation, growing sale, dispensation
and or other use of medical marijuana" for an additional six months.

Police Chief Donald C. Mawer said the original referendum came from a
vaguely drafted law.

"If it doesn't say I can't do something, then it says I can," Mawer
told council members Tuesday of the common interpretation of the law
as it is written.

The moratorium follows a ruling last month when the Michigan Court of
Appeals overturned an earlier ruling, saying the state's medical
marijuana act does not permit dispensaries that do business as
patient-to-patient sales centers.

The original moratorium was enacted on March 8 and would have expired
Sept. 8.
