ANTI-ECSTASY PLAN APPROVED BY CITY

Addiction education focused on ecstasy is heading to Calgary bars
after a spate of deaths linked to the drug.

A majority of council members Tuesday backed Ald. John Mar's motion
asking the city to spend up to $150,000 on the project.

The motion passed on a 9-5 vote with Ald. Diane Colley-urquhart not present.

Ald. Gord Lowe amended Mar's motion to make sure that other levels of
government are helping.

Most of Lowe's colleagues supported the amendment, which put the
project "contingent on matching contribution of other orders of
government." Ald. Brian Pincott didn't support Mar's proposal,
calling it fear based. "While I appreciate the intent behind this, I
do think that it is the wrong approach," he said.

"It's not our place to sit down and suggest that just because these
individuals are involved in illegal drugs that it's OK that they die,
because it's not," he said.

Bureaucrats will report back no later than June.
