WAR AGAINST MARILJUANA IS POINTLESS

California voted to allow the distribution of medical marijuana to
those who have a doctor's prescription for it ["Medical-marijuana
proponents seek ballot measure for Santa Ana," Local, Feb. 8]: How
does this ballot measure change the status quo?

Residents complaining about dispensaries are the minority. They just
speak louder than the supporters. Police and authorities are archaic.
To them, marijuana is a street drug that causes problems; that's how
they've been trained.

The war against marijuana is a losing battle that wastes time and
money. Legalize marijuana and collect taxes on it. Whether illegal or
not, those who want to purchase marijuana will find a way to purchase
the drug. The stuff can grow in anybody's house.

Let's think beyond this initiative and finally legalize the drug with
certain restrictions. The revenue and the potential savings could pay
for our fumbling educational system.
