GRASSROOTS MUST FORCE CHANGE IN POT LAWS

Re: "Change pot laws, say Island councillors," April 15.

Prohibition of the '30s didn't work as planned. Marijuana laws of
today don't work, either.

In both cases, the laws create big profits for the seamy side of the
population, while the law-abiders pick up the cost of the
enforcement. The groundswell of common sense with regard to marijuana
laws is rapidly gaining ground while the feds and the sleepy Senate dither.

As with the tobacco laws, the impetus has to come from the grassroots
level, regardless of the furor from the defenders of the status quo.

Harper and his crew will eventually have to bend to the wishes of the
voting public.
