87-YEAR-OLD POT GROWER AND THE WAR ON DRUGS

Re: "Denver DA: Octogenarian busted for growing 400 pot plants in
backyard," Aug. 4 news story.

I don't know about you, but I now know that my tax dollars are being
spent wisely. The police just arrested an 87-year-old man growing pot
in his backyard, and the district attorney has vowed to prosecute
this octogenarian hipster for possessing "tools and material
indicative of distribution beyond personal use."

Now, 400 marijuana plants does suggest more than "personal use," but
the fact that an 87-year-old can take care of that kind of
horticultural enterprise should count for something. Notwithstanding
the fact that within a stoner's throw from his backyard there are
probably 10 legal marijuana dispensaries, the war on drugs marches on
to the benefit of, well, generally politicians, the local cops and the DEA.
