POLICE CRACKING DOWN ON IZMS SELLERS

It's advertised as legal marijuana; however, the Halton Regional
Police Service says it's just as illegal as the real thing and want it
off Halton's streets.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying convenience
stores and businesses selling the drug 'Izms.'

Police began receiving inquires about the drug in January, but said it
has actually been on the market since 2011.

There are various flavours and different strengths for the product,
which resembles crushed marijuana and is meant to be smoked.

Police said the product is being distributed through convenience
stores and sundries shops, but is also available online.

Analysis of 'Izms' by Health Canada has identified the presence of
synthetic cannabinoids, which police said makes it an illegal substance.

Police state it is a criminal offence to possess, possess for the
purpose of trafficking or traffic in a cannabinoid.

It is also illegal to import or export the substance.

Residents who observe a convenience store or business offering 'Izms'
products in Halton are asked to notify the Integrated Drug, Gun and
Gang Unit at 905-825-4747 ext. 8732 or by email Members of the public are asked to provide the name and address of the
business, the product found and the approximate quantity.

Uniform officers will be checking local stores and the Halton Regional
Police Integrated Drug, Gun and Gang Unit will be acting on
information collected.

Police intend to educate the public and business owners on the
illegalities and health consequences related to 'Izms' before
initiating any criminal proceedings.
