Drug Testing

A SHORT- TERM SOLUTION THAT FAILS TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM

Suncor's proposed policy of random drug testing is more than an
invasion of privacy; it is a treatment of symptoms rather than the
cause. To effectively curb substance abuse, the company should be
funding programs that address the reasons for drug use.

Furthermore, drug testing can target the wrong group. Urine tests
identify the drug, but not when it was last used.

The argument that drug testing is for safety purposes is invalid
because someone who tests positive for a drug may be equally as
competent as someone who tests negative. Safety is only a concern
during the period of intoxication, which drug testing does not reveal.

Most oilfield workers work long hours and have little personal time
while on shift. They therefore, tend not to make many social connections.

Many work irregular hours which can seclude them even further. All
these things cause stress which seems to be the root cause of
substance abuse. Additional social programs for employees and
contractors could decrease this stress. Some programs should be
offered at hours that allow night-crews to benefit from them as well.

Debt may also be a source of stress for some workers. To address
this, basic classes on managing personal finances could be provided.

The key is to be proactive not reactive. All in all, if the sources
of stress are addressed, substance abuse should decrease along with it.
