HANCOCK RIGHT ON POT

Re: "Hit and miss on Denver pot regs," April 17 editorial.

It surprised me to see that The Denver Post went after Mayor Michael
Hancock in its Tuesday editorial on Amendment 64 at a time when I
think he should be applauded. The mayor has shown a real backbone by
standing up for Coloradans' health and safety in regards to the new
recreational marijuana law.

The editorial argues that Hancock's endorsement of a two year
phase-in of recreational pot shops creates an unfair advantage for
existing marijuana businesses. But the way I see it, business
interests shouldn't come first in this issue. Not only will a slow
rollout allow communities to figure out how to educate children on
and protect them from marijuana, but it will also decrease the
likelihood that taxpayers have to front the bill on regulation. That
certainly wasn't the case with medical marijuana.
