INCREASE IN MARIJUANA INCIDENTS IN COLO. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Re: "High times in schools," Nov. 12 news story.

I'm disappointed in your article about marijuana use allegedly rising
in Colorado schools. It reeks of an ignorant reefer madness that
we're supposed to be progressing from. One has to read to the end to
see that national data shows alcohol and other drug use actually
dropping, while marijuana use is rising. I'd say this is a good
thing. Alcohol is the second-most deadly drug nationwide, after
tobacco. Marijuana, in contrast, has directly killed a grand total of
zero people ever. It is an incredibly safe substance; that is the
scientific fact.

No one wants very young people using marijuana, of course, but a new
Gallup poll showed 58 percent of Americans want legalization for
adults. I'd say it's time for us adults to have a more adult and
scientific attitude about this subject-namely, teen drug use should
be the responsibility of parents, not creepy drug counselors who spy
on teens with binoculars.
