OAKLAND COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT ORDERS OAK PARK PUT MARIJUANA PROPOSAL
ON AUGUST BALLOT

An Oakland County Circuit Court judge has ordered that the city of
Oak Park shall submit a marijuana legalization proposal to the county
clerk's office to be put on the August ballot.

The verdict came after the city and Safer Oak Park Coalition, which
sued the city, came to an agreement to put the proposal on the
ballot. The order was issued by Judge Rae Lee Chabot.

The group filed a lawsuit recently demanding the city put their
marijuana legalization proposal on the August ballot, but attorneys
for Oak Park argued the city needs to get the ballot language
approved by the state Attorney General's office before putting it on
the August ballot.

City Manager Erik Tungate said the city followed all the legal
procedures but it's the Attorney General's office that has the final
word on the ballot language.

"Oak Park has just been put in a precarious position here, where
various parties are perhaps playing politics," Tungate said after the
court issued the order, adding that he is "not accusing" the attorney
general specifically.

Members of the coalition that sued the city said they were happy with
the order and would cooperate with the city in future in case of any
third-party litigations.

"We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Oak Park," Tim Beck,
co-founder of Safer Michigan Coalition said.
