SHOOTING SENDS MAN TO HOSPITAL

Resident says northeast gas station now a hot spot for gangs and
drugs

A man was shot near a northeast liquor store in Calgary on Saturday
night.

Police and EMS workers received reports of gunfire at about 8: 15 p.m.
on the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Drive N. E., near the Rundle liquor
store.

Emergency crews transported a 30-year-old man with potentially life-
threatening injuries to Foothills Hospital. Police said Sunday the
man's condition remains serious, but he's expected to survive.

Across the street, residents heard gunshots and saw a vehicle flee the
scene. "I was thinking it was a car accident," said Halena, who
declined to give her last name. She was smoking on her porch when she
heard the shots.

The shooting occurred just 400 metres from the site of another
shooting earlier this month. On Jan. 14, someone fired a rifle at two
people who were sitting in a vehicle at the Co-op Gas Bar up the
street on 52nd Avenue.

Police said that shooting may be linked to an organized crime group
involved in the drug trade.

On Saturday night, police taped off hundreds of metres of roads. 52nd
Street was closed between 16th Avenue and 26th Avenue N. E., and
Rundlehorn Drive was cordoned off for several blocks.

News of the shooting didn't surprise to three-year Rundle resident Ken
Johnson. He was walking out of the Shell station close to the liquor
store when he saw emergency crews loading a man onto a stretcher.

He said it's just one of many recent incidents in the
neighbourhood.

"I won't let my wife walk over here to buy cigarettes," he said,
pointing at the gas station, which was surrounded by police tape.
Outside the liquor store, a coat and a backpack could be seen on the
pavement near evidence markers. "It's crazy."

He said there's significant drug and gang activity in the
neighbourhood, adding the Shell station alone has been the site of
multiple incidents. "It's a rough place," he said. Police couldn't say
if this was a targeted attack or if the shooting was linked to gang
activity.
