TAKE PROFIT MOTIVE OUT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT

Regarding "Asset-seizure law would harm state" (Aug. 21): I
understand if you take drug or narcotic dealers' money and assets
away from them it is more destructive to their operation than sending
a few to jail. Cops, sheriffs and drug agencies were capable of
protecting the public before forfeiture.

The real issue is accountability. Now law enforcement authorities are
under budgetary pressure. They are driven by a profit incentive so
too often they abuse innocent citizens. Public safety is best served
when law enforcement priorities are focused on catching the bad
actors without profit incentives.

I could send you five pages of innocent people whose assets were
collected. Your assets are guilty until you prove your own innocence.
I, for one, believe in SB 443.
