Mayor Carol Hamilton said she counted three members of the public that showed up to voice their opinion on the matter and the discussion at the March 22 meeting was done in about 10 minutes. Those who spoke compared marijuana storefronts to liquor stores, giving customers the ability to buy at multiple places. While the federal government has made its intention to legalize marijuana pretty clear, the rules haven't changed yet, said Hamilton. "We still have to abide by the laws that exist." If the laws change, council can revisit and adjust its bylaw accordingly, she said. Colwood council directed staff to draft regulations in response to questions from the community about the potential for storefront sales. "It's just putting some rules around it; we're not saying it can't happen," Hamilton said. She expects council will see the proposed bylaw at its April 11 meeting. - --- MAP posted-by: Jay Bergstrom
