She recently turned 18, and if Malia Obama did not know that she had become a legitimate target for sections of the American media, she does now. The "First Daughter" was videoed smoking what a witness claimed was a joint in a video clip released yesterday. The footage was taken at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago last month. It is unclear from the images whether what Obama can be seen puffing on is a regular cigarette or one rolled with cannabis. The president's elder daughter caused a mild stir when she decided to head to the festival in July, because it meant she skipped Hillary Clinton's historic nomination speech at the Democratic National Convention. She finished high school during the northern summer and has embarked on a gap year before taking up a place at Harvard University in 2017. If she was smoking cannabis, she could always explain to her parents that her inspiration came from close to home. Long before he became president, Barack Obama raked over his own youthful struggles in his 1995 memoir Dreams From My Father. "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow [cocaine] when you could afford it," he wrote. Asked in 2006 whether, unlike Bill Clinton, he had inhaled, he grinned and replied: "That was the point, wasn't it?" - -The Times - --- MAP posted-by: Jay Bergstrom
