JUDGE WARNS OF POT'S IMPACT

Young teen leaves victim with concussion

An attack that left a girl with a concussion resulted in a year's
probation for another Lambton County girl.

The impact of marijuana use on developing brains was one of the issues
to be examined during probation.

Science has identified substantial negative mental impacts on teens'
developing brains and the focus on marijuana use within the girl's
report was concerning, said Justice Deborah Austin during the girl's
sentencing.

The young teenage girl had pleaded guilty in Sarnia youth court to an
assault causing bodily harm during the spring.

The incident occurred at an elementary school when the teen called
upon the victim to fight.

A teacher intervened and sent the girl for a time-out. The girl
returned and punched the victim in the head, causing a concussion. The
attacker suffered broken fingers.

A comprehensive report presented to the court about the girl
identified issues that require continuing intervention.

The probation order will have the girl engage with professionals so
changes can be made at an early stage in her life, said assistant
Crown attorney Krista Leszczynski.

During probation the girl must take counseling for substance abuse and
any other identified issue while participating in recommended programs.

In outlining the programs Austin told the girl "you have to step up to
the plate."

The girl agreed that the report before the court gave her some
personal insights.

The objective is to keep the girl on a more positive path so her
emotions can be regulated in her dealings with other people, said Austin.

In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act the girl cannot be
identified.
