Bonderoff THE PROPHETS OF POT The prophets of pot are capitalizing on the sick and infirm in our population. According to a dispensary owner, their patient load is 1,000. They say that potentially this could be doubled because the patients have spouses or significant others living with them. Another dispensary owner claims the same patient case load. This brings to number to at least 2,000 and possible 3,000. Assuming the other 4 dispensary owners have half that number of patients this brings the number of patients to 5,000. If the service area to Nelson is a population of 15,000 people, fully one-third of the population is in some sort of health distress. I would think that this should be national news and that the WHO (World Health Organization)should be informed of this epidemic. Now to the economics: if each patient requires a gram of pot (1/28th of an ounce) per day to help them survive, at a cost of $10.00, it is a $70.00 per week cure. Multiplied by 1,000 patients per dispensary, this works out to $70,000 per week, $210,000.00 per month and $2,520,000.00 per year gross per dispensary. If the dispensaries buy this medical pot for $5 per gram, the profit is $1,260,000.00 per year. Ormerely $630,000.00 for those with half the patient load. The bottom line is this, we are in a health care crisis of epidemic proportions in Nelson, or these dispensary owners are actually using a weak clause in law to make huge money on what is really recreational pot, and maybe that's why they don't want to lose their illegal store front dispensaries.
