VIGILANCE PAYS OFF

THE seizure of pounds 15m worth of cannabis off the coast is yet another
graphic illustration of the sheer scale of international drug smuggling. It
follows the discovery of pounds 1m worth of ecstasy tablets. Not for the
first time, the authorities were alerted by keen-eyed local observers
suspicious of the unseasonal arrival of a converted 70-foot trawler in
Irish waters.

The size of the haul, believed to be destined for Britain and the
Continent, underlines the importance of the voluntary coastal watch mounted
by fishermen and local people and the need for constant vigilance on the
drugs route off the south west coast.
