OPPOSE CLINIC

I am writing out of a deep concern for the methadone clinic which I
understand has leased space within a group of doctors' and dentists'
office on South Queen Street in York.

My concern is from past experience. In the '80s while living in York,
my job headquartered in New York City and required that I live in New
York during the week. The apartment was in a nice neighborhood, but
there was a methadone clinic around the corner.

During that time, my car was broken into twice, stolen once and my
apartment, which was on the first floor, was almost broken into -
only the steel door and four locks kept the intruder out.

Methadone is not a cure for heroin addiction, it is a substitute.
While it is a maintenance program, we often forget that heroin
addicts are the source of much crime in this country because of
their need to support their habits.

Just because methadone is available through a clinic does not mean
that the criminal activities needed to support the original heroin
addiction habit will cease.

I urge anyone in the immediate area of the proposed clinic to take
whatever steps necessary to oppose this clinic lest we resort to
adding steel doors with four locks to all of our homes.
