LABOR PUSH FOR FEDERAL DRUGS DEAL

A discussion paper which includes proposals to improve coordination at a
federal level in the fight against illicit drug use will be released by
Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley today.

The paper - the product of six months' work by a shadow ministerial
committee - deals with law enforcement and legal matters, demand reduction,
and social issues such as education and support for families.

The timing is deliberate with Labor wanting to contribute to public
discussion on illicit drug use ahead of Friday's Premiers' Conference, where
it is expected to top the agenda.

A spokesman for Mr Beazley said the chief recommendation was that there be a
greater level of Commonwealth coordination of the fight against drugs
through education and rehabilitation programs, and alternative therapy
programs such as methadone and Naltrexone for heroin users.
