Contact: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/ Author: William Allen ESTATE GETS CASH TO FIGHT DRUGS BATTLE A LONDONDERRY estate is to be given a massive cash boost to aid its fight against drugs, it emerged today. It is understood as much as UKP100,000 will be earmarked for Currynierin as the District Partnership bids to help tackle problems in marginalised areas. For several years, residents of the area have complained they are suffering from an influx of drug dealers asked to leave other areas of the city. It is also believed the neighbouring Tullyally estate, where community leaders hope to build a UKP750,000 multi-purpose centre, could share in a windfall from the District Partnership. Sources within the partnership say the estate will also be given a UKP100,000 grant to tackle problems caused by isolation and marginalisation. It is also hoped that the cash will boost relations between the two neighbouring areas and alleviate problems that can occur when tensions rise over the summer. The co-chair of the District Partnership, William Hay, today said he could not comment on the amounts of money that might be granted, but could confirm there is "a strong, strong possibility" that the two areas would be given cash assistance. He added: "The District Partnership made a strong case for and was given an extra UKP500,000, and is looking at a number of initiatives. "I can confirm that Tullyally and Currynierin are two of the initiatives we are looking at. "Each of these areas has its own problems including of course the drugs problem faced by Currynierin. "These areas have not received much financial help in the past. And as co-chair of the partnership I believe any grants should be spread as fairly as possible." - --- MAP posted-by: Don Beck
