We are, it seems, still squeamish about even talking about the legalisation of cannabis. Charles Kennedy raised the subject and was slapped down by those who believe, despite the evidence, that cannabis leads to harder drugs. A sea change has passed by - cannabis is almost legal anyway. There are few prosecutions for possession of small amounts for personal use. The police have better things to do. But if anything is going to put young people off trying it, it is last week's pronouncement by the Bishop of Edinburgh, Richard Holloway, that young people should be taught how to use it, comparing it to cream sherry.
