WHAT KIND OF DRUG WAR?

The annual national Household Survey on Drug Abuse ("Don't relax anti-drug
effort," Aug. 23) always provides a reason why the drug war should be
intesified.

It doesn't matter if the numbers went up or down; after all, as your
editorial states, "fighting drugs is an eternal proposition."

However, before we all jump on the band-wagon. how about answering a few
questions: What exactly do you mean when you say anti-drug efforts should be
intensified? What is your goal: zero drug use, a reduction in the harm
caused by drug use or something else?

Do you want more drug offenders to do more time in prison, or do you want
more treatment for addicts?

Do you want increased military involement here and abroad?

If you're going to promote the drug war at least come clean about what you
want.
