1 CN ON: Edu: PUB LTE: Re-legalize Cannabis And Live With ItTue, 08 Mar 2016

The Argus reported; Colorado made driving under the influence of pot illegal (Rolling Stoned, Mar. 2, 2016), before commercial sale took place. That was in May 2013, however, Amendment 64, which ended cannabis (marijuana) prohibition went into effect on Dec. 10, 2012.

Ending the discredited prohibition of cannabis, the act of caging responsible, innocent adults who use cannabis should not be dependent on whether or not police and their unions have tools to enforce driving laws. Rather it's the other way around; re-legalize the relatively safe, extremely popular God-given plant and then figure out how to live with it.

A sane or moral argument to punish innocent citizens doesn't exist.

Truthfully,

Stan White

Dillon, Colorado

Pot Legalization and the Future of Impaired Driving Legislation

There have been a lot of serious discussions regarding the legalization of marijuana in Canada in the last year. Since elected, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is mandated to begin the process of legalizing cannabis in Canada. Although it's hard to predict what exactly this process will involve, and what a system of legalized marijuana will look like in Canada, Trudeau has stated that Canada may look towards the Colorado model, as the state legalized in 2012.

*disclaimer: The Argus does not advocate for the use of substances of any kind.

College and university is where most people have their first (and sometimes only) experiences with drug use. The most commonly used and abused drug of choice for student is, of course, alcohol (yes, it's a drug). Another drug up on the list for Canadian students is marijuana.

Stimulants such as cocaine and 'party' drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy) or mushrooms often make their first appearance in college and university as well. Whatever your opinion on the physiological impacts or legal status of these substances, their presence is a reality in student culture.

Last week, the Argus published an article by Jonathan Chien, the health promoter at Lakehead's Health and Counseling Center. The article, titled 'Marijuana Talk,' was also published on the Argus website at theargus.ca. It became a controversial subject, generating many negative remarks.

Some people commented severely on the nature of research in the article, while others did not refrain from criticizing the very personality of the author. 'This person is a blatant liar and should be either flagged as a false posting, or banned from the site for spreading lies and falsities,' wrote one commenter who identified him/herself as Dave.

Over the years and to this day, marijuana is a hot topic. There is much debate on the health risks associated with it and its legal status. Much of this debate is due to marijuana being labelled as a "mild hallucinogen" and has the misconception of being harmless or less harmful than other drugs and substances like tobacco and alcohol. Like it or not, it is illegal to possess and produce marijuana in Canada.

Illegal drugs can be categorized by the nature of their physiological effects. These categories include stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens. Marijuana once fell under each category due to the unpredictable nature of the drug when taken. However, most experts today consider marijuana to be a drug category in itself. The marijuana (or cannabis) category also includes hashish, hashish oil and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the ingredient that gives you your "high" and hallucinogenic effect. Since marijuana is illegal, there is no regulation and the concentration of THC in marijuana varies.

Canada's "Prince Of Pot" Talks With The Argus Before Extradition To U.S. Prison

Most Canadians think pot should be legalized, but we just can't seem to muster much outrage over its prohibition. Even students, well known for their love of hedonism and their hatred of "The Man", often dismiss the issue as marginal and sophomoric. In short, nearly everyone with a bone of sense in their bodies realizes the glaring contradictions and sheer absurdity of marijuana prohibition, but for the progressively-minded, it can seem like a distraction from the "real" issues.

7 CN ON: Edu: Column: Legalizing Pot Won't Increase TourismThu, 23 Nov 2006

Well ok, not in the traditional sense. It might bring in people, but this is not the type of tourism Thunder Bay needs. Thunder Bay needs tourists who will come here, stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, play at our golf courses and shop at our local stores. I do not think that legalizing marijuana will bring in this type of tourist. I can speculate two types of "tourists" that this would bring in: the first being the hippie pot-head with no money that comes to our city to crash with their stoner buddies, and contribute nothing to society.
