Former Saline County Prosecutor Dan Harmon was convicted in June 1997 of one count of racketeering, three counts of conspiring to commit extortion and one count of conspiring to possess and distribute marijuana. He was recently released after eight years in federal prison and will live in a halfway house for several months. The racketeering charge alleged that Harmon used his 7th Judicial District prosecuting attorney's office - his jurisdiction included Saline, Grant and Hot Spring counties - as an illegal crime organization to obtain money and drugs. I personally can say Saline County has and has had a severe problem of drug and alcohol abuse for several years. I myself suffered from being an active alcoholic for most of 40 adult years. Now that we are getting a new detention facility and a court system with officials who are addressing this disease, why not try and see if we can get a treatment facility that would be affordable to address a growing problem which is the largest problem we have as far as the crimes committed here? Fighting crime and the prevalent use and manufacture of methamphetamine fall in the same web for the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. "Meth manufacturing and abuse creates a ripple effect in our society," Prosecuting Attorney Robert Herzfeld said. Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Herzfeld, Jr. is working on his first project to fulfill his drug crime-fighting objectives promised during his election campaign. Herzfeld and Saline County Circuit Judge Gary Arnold announced Wednesday their intentions to work together to bring into being an adult drug court to serve the county. With a proposed completion date in the earlier months of 2004, the drug court would provide an 18-month drug rehabilitation program to eligible candidates - criminals charged with a second drug-related offense - in lieu of serving prison time. BRYANT - Shelby, a 15-month-old Labrador retriever, proved to be worth her salt Monday. The animal was recently purchased from the Little Rock K-9 Academy to serve as a narcotics dog in the Bryant School District. Trainer Tony Smith tested Shelby by hiding narcotics in metal boxes. The animal detected two bags of narcotics, much to Smith's surprise. "I only hid one unit of narcotics," he said. "One of our other trainers left narcotics and she detected both of them.
