I agree wholeheartedly with Linda Burt of the American Civil Liberties Union in her letter of June 11, "Wyoming should consider decriminalizing pot."

Every American should read "Smoke Signals" by Martin A. Lee. Mr. Lee tells about how marijuana was demonized by Harry Anslinger back in 1934 when he determined to convince Congress and Americans that a dangerous new drug was threatening the country.

He did this because tax revenues were down and his department in the government was on the chopping block. It was also a way to promote racism against African Americans, Mexicans and Asians. The laws put in place at that time were truly draconian.

The deaths of four RCMP officers in Alberta was a tragedy felt by many across Canada.

Felt by their family and friends, of course, and by all police officers ever to put on a badge.

For those of us who live in the towns, villages, hamlets and rural areas of Saugeen Shores and Grey and Bruce counties the tragedy came a little too close to home.

Mayerthorpe could have easily been Glammis, Arkwright or Turners, tiny communities very far from the mean streets of Toronto.

The drug problem in Saugeen Shores is the same as it is in Owen Sound, London and Toronto, say police.

Shoreline Beacon -- The drug problem in Saugeen Shores is the same as it is in Owen Sound, London and Toronto, say police. As a ratio to the population, there are the same numbers of drug users.

"We just don't have as many as Owen Sound because it has seven times the population," said Sgt. Dan Rivett of Saugeen Shores Police Service. Our local police are in touch with their counterparts across the country and it's no different anywhere else. Investigating drug abusers and traffickers is a part of their everyday job.
