The Lloydminster Area Drug Strategy and Action Committee (LADSAC) has new material available for people looking for information on drugs.

The LADSAC resource handbook has been completed and is available for distribution through the public library resource centre. The handbook deals with numerous issues, in addition to providing information on drug facts, treatment centers, and different resources in Lloydminster. The LADSAC says the completion of the handbook was something on their radar since their creation, and hope it will help facilitate better communication within the region.

The Lloydminster Area Drug Strategy and Action Committee (LADSAC) has set their goals for 2007 and is ready to buckle down and get to work in the community, starting today.

LADSAC, a group created in March last year, is made up of more than a dozen prominent local organizations that have joined forces with the City of Lloydminster to formulate a made-at-home drug action plan. Today marks the first of a number of awareness presentations slated for the upcoming year as Holy Rosary high school and Lloyd Comp high school will be visited by two speakers from the Regina and Area Drug Strategy Speakers Program. The two speakers will share their experiences with substance abuse with students, parents, and interested community members in the hopes of inspiring positive change.

The Government of Alberta is taking steps to ensure children exposed to drug activity can be protected.

The Government of Alberta is taking steps to ensure children exposed to drug activity can be protected.

A new law, which went into effect Nov.1, allows child intervention caseworkers and police to rescue and protect children based solely on the fact they are endangered by the drug activities of adults. The law, which is the first of its kind in Canada, aims to reduce the amount of children affected by drug activity like manufacturing and trafficking in their home.

A retired RCMP member held his own candlelight vigil at the city's Hope statue in memory of two slain officers and says laws have to get tougher to protect those in the line of duty.

Cpl. J.E. (Joe) Belyea was stationed in Lloydminster from 1971 to 1978 and as a retired veteran, he felt obligated to do something in support of Const. Robin Cameron and Const. Marc Bourdages of the Spiritwood detachment, who died Monday as a result of injuries suffered on July 7. Belyea was in charge of the rural detachment for the Lloydminster RCMP, and felt he owed it to the fallen officers to light two candles for them at the base of the Hope statue to ensure they would not be forgotten.

Lloydminster Meridian Booster -- A recent report released by Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta says the Hell's Angels and other organized crime groups are expanding into Alberta, including Lloydminster.

"Several new organized crime groups have been reported in the Eastern Alberta district, one based in Fort McMurray and one operating in the east central area of the province between Lloydminster and Provost," said the report. "Both are primarily street-level drug distribution groups and have demonstrated violence and intimidation to defend their drug markets and collect drug debts."

Lloydminster Meridian Booster -- Lloydminster drug dealers are trying to find a more hospitable place to do business, and evade local law enforcement in the process.

Sgt. Ken Marchand of the Lloydminster RCMP said there has been some drug dealing going on out of some hotel rooms in the Border City, but wouldn't say it was a crime that's on the rise.

"It's a cat-and-mouse game," said Marchand. "We catch wind of deals going on from residents and we start doing our investigation, and they move on. They move into a hotel room where they figure they are not under the spotlight."
