Last week the RCMP arrested four men with links to the White Boy Posse, a street gang based out of Edmonton. Two of those men were Lloydminster residents. The arrests came in connection to three murders and one attempted murder; one of the murders and the attempted murder took place just north of Lloydminster on Range Road 11. According to Lloydminster RCMP Cpl. Shayne Hartwell, there isn't a great deal of gang activity in Lloydminster, but the White Boy Posse are active in the Border City. [continues 1179 words]
This weekend's Ride On Against Drugs has not had the support of previous years thus far, according to organizer Dave Rechlo. So far only nine riders are signed up for the 220-kilometre bike ride, just half of last year's total. Rechlo said that some people are probably scared off by the length of the ride, but anyone is welcome to join the ride for as many kilometres as they like, even if that's only 10. However, Rechlo doesn't think people should be put off by the length. [continues 423 words]
Substance abuse is a key concern for the community of Lloydminster, particularly youth substance abuse. With over a third of Lloydminster residents saying the issue of youth substance abuse is becoming worse and 75 per cent of the community believing schools in the city are not drug free, according the Lloydminster Area Drug Strategy (LADSAC) released last month, the new prevention program - Kids and Drugs- a parent's guide to prevention - couldn't have come at a better time. "My hope is that it becomes sustainable within the community and that it's something that we can carry forward," said LADSAC coordinator Teressa Krueckl of the new program. [continues 353 words]
It's been a quiet time in the city over the summer when it comes to crime, relatively speaking. But they are guessing it's not likely to last. Sgt. Ken Marchand says a street project set up in June of 2007 that hit some major players in the city and saw a drastic reduction over the summer. With the same done this year, it netted similar results in July and August. Now police are bracing themselves for what could be a busy fall. [continues 263 words]
