The heart of war on illegal drugs in the eastern Colorado plains was in danger because of to lack of funding. That all ended Friday with an announcement late in a congressional hearing held here. Late in the Congressional Field Hearing on Meth Abuse in Northern Colorado, Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., said she has secured a direct appropriation funding for the Eastern Colorado Plains Drug Task Force for 2007. The Amount, Musgrave said could be as much as $250,000 - similar to the amount awarded to local law enforcement from Weld and Larimer counties last year. [continues 737 words]

Law enforcement agencies in rural communities find themselves fighting an ongoing battle, utilizing most of their resources in battling a drug which can be made in any kitchen. A drug with immense abuse potential, methamphetamine - known on the street as speed, meth, crank, crystal-meth, and glass - is a central nervous system stimulant of the amphetamine family. Like cocaine, it is a powerful upper that produces alertness, and elation, along with a variety of adverse reactions. The effects of methamphetamine, however, are much longer lasting then the effects of cocaine, yet the cost is much the same. The 32nd Judicial District Attorney's office announced the dismissal of drug charges against 16 individuals who were arrested in Fisher County as a result of a year-long undercover investigation. The dismissal, according to a statement from District Attorney Mark Edwards, was done after the discovery of a confidential informant allegedly fabricating information to authorities, which led to the arrest of one of the defendants. Fisher County Sheriff Mickey Counts identified the informant as 35-year-old Tommy Lamont Williams, originally of Sweetwater. Counts said Williams currently lives in Rotan. [continues 285 words]
