To the editor: I would like to comment on Charley Reese's March 14 column, "Only change will solve drug problem," with "Ban pharmaceutical ads and legalize drugs" as its subhead. Very briefly, I say, "Amen. Amen." Eugene F. Bernard, Topsham [end]
To the editor: I must add my ditto to Robert Sharpe's letter (May 3, "End drug policy madness") regarding Jonathan White's thoughtful article (April 23, "Hidden cost of drug war"). We Americans are way overdue to approach our drug problem with intelligence. We've got to stop pouring billions of dollars down the proverbial "rat hole." To date, our approach to our drug problems has been a dismal failure and even has escalated the problem. The only results we have to show for our efforts are the many who have profiteered from the misery of the drug addicts. Let's ask our Congressional representatives to insist that our federal government take a more sensible approach to our drug problems. Gene Bernard, Topsham [end]
