I urge voters to vote yes on G and yes on H in the June 7 primary. Unlike other counties, Butte County has not chosen to ban cannabis growing, but has chosen to limit the amount and location of grows. When Measure A passed, the stench of growing pot left many neighborhoods, and some of the growing abuses were reduced. It appears pot-related violence went down as well. The Board of Supervisors fine-tuned Measure A, to protect agriculture, and to improve enforcement. I encourage you to support their efforts. By working together we can support everyone's rights and needs. G and H are reasonable and fair for those who grow, and those who choose to live without the harm of cannabis surrounding them. - - Helen Harberts, Chico [end]
The environmental harm, water theft, contamination of our streams, and destruction of habitat, road destruction, violence, and destruction brought by rampant commercial grows must be stopped. This is not a property rights issue. It is pure unmitigated greed versus the future of our resources and community. I urge citizens to take a tour and see what is happening in our foothills. Be careful: they have guns. You like the stink in your neighborhood? Me either. Measure A allows medical grows to continue. It stops the huge for-profit commercial grows for non-Butte County markets. Nobody is going to run out of pot around here. But we should not destroy our area to supply other states and greedy careless growers from across the USA. [continues 85 words]
The recent letter by Garry Cooper regarding the "epic battle between good and evil" regarding marijuana is misleading. Cooper can have his own opinions, but he can't have his own facts. While Cooper rails about imprisonment for marijuana, the simple fact is that in California, possession of marijuana is an infraction. It is a traffic ticket. As Cooper rails that the federal prisons are full of drug offenders, he implies that this is cannabis only. That is wrong. He uses poor or zero facts to justify his comments. The true facts may be found in a fact sheet called "Need to Know" from the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (www.nadcp.org). [continues 141 words]
