A CAMPAIGNER for the legalisation of cannabis is calling on Braintree Council to organise a seminar to discuss the reclassification of the drug. Don Barnard of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance wants the council to hold a meeting to discuss the downgrading of the drug from class B to class C. Mr Barnard of the LCA, who lives in Aetheric Road, said: "This is a subject which needs to be discussed now. Plans to open Essex's first cannabis cafe have been narrowed down to near Witham's Humber Road estate. Reporter Michael Powell asked residents what they thought of the idea. CONTROVERSIAL, it may be. A mystery investor wants to open Essex's first ever cannabis cafe in Witham. The Dutch-style pot smoking den could open in Witham, if drugs laws change. It would be one of more than a dozen others planned across the country, including Glasgow, Milton Keynes, Liverpool and London. The plan has been revealed after a Government advisory committee last week called for cannabis to be downgraded from a Class B drug to Class C, leading many campaigners to believe the cafes were now inevitable. A 60-year-old candidate for the up-coming Braintree Council by-election has called for Dutch-style cannabis cafes to be created in Braintree. Don Barnard, who is standing for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, said a more tolerant view of cannabis possession and minor cannabis offences would give police more time to deal with more serious crimes. He feels the building of coffee shops, such as those in Amsterdam, would provide a safe place for people to use cannabis.
