Re: Top Cop, BIV profile (October 12 - 18; issue 781)

I'm sure that Bev Busson (deputy commissioner of the RCMP's Pacific Division) is what the article describes her as: a good, solid police officer with a lot of experience. I would only question her strong opposition to legalizing drugs. Many other members of society are against legalizing drugs, however, the laws in place don't work. If we have laws that make drugs illegal, why are a lot of people doing drugs openly? If we as a society can't enforce our laws, why have them in the first place? In this case why not legalize drugs but punish the drug user when he or she commits a crime under the influence? At least that way tax is being collected and our crime rate will go down significantly. Let's face it, if people want to get high using drugs, it's their business. They will do drugs anyway regardless of what the law says.

Society would be much better off if law enforcement would go after the real criminals such as child molesters, rapists and murderers.
