Despite an appeal by a local resident to do otherwise, the Westcliffe trustees have chosen to opt out of allowing medical marijuana dispensaries within the town limits.

An ordinance adopting such action was approved via a six to one vote during the regular Westcliffe trustees meeting on Dec. 7. Trustee John Johnston voted no on adoption of the ordinance.

Johnson did not state a reason for his nay vote, however, during previous trustee meetings Johnson has indicated he was in favor of allowing the dispensaries.

Custer County voters will go to the voting booth in November to decide whether to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the county.

The decision to take the matter to the voters was made during the commissioners' regular meeting on Tuesday, July 6.

Also, the current county moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries has been extended until the results of the Nov. 2 election.

Colorado House Bill 10-1284 regarding medical marijuana was recently signed into law.

The new law sets up a state and local licensing process for medical marijuana centers or dispensaries as they are commonly called.

Concern About Custer County School's Recently Adopted Code Of Conduct Has Surfaced.

At the start of the Sept. 12 school board meeting, C-1 parent Jeff Reeves shared his unease regarding the school's code of conduct policy for students participating in extracurricular activities.

According to Reeves, the policy leaves the school district open to liability troubles.

"The code went too far," said Reeves. He said the code of conduct addresses how students must behave regardless of whether or not they are at a school-sponsored activity.
