Peterborough Drug Strategy is holding a new set of training sessions this fall to support the work of professionals in aid-driven fields.

PDS's Question of Care training program is offering a first-stage trauma treatment workshop and a dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills workshop.

The workshops are designed to educate staff employed in social work, addiction counselling, mental health and shelters, for example.

Jessica Penner, co-ordinator of PDS, said PDS strives to offer training so local agencies don't have to create in-house sessions or travel to other cities for education.

The city's first medical marijuana dispensary is opening downtown next month.

GE Weed Emporium is slated to open Sept. 1, on George St. near Hunter St.

It'll serve medical marijuana patients over the age of 21 who have a doctor's note or medical marijuana licence and a membership to the emporium.

Those who don't have a membership won't be allowed in the store.

Will Johnston is the owner of GE Weed Emporium.

He has already opened stores in Toronto, Scarborough and Oshawa.

Information booths set up in Victoria Park to promote legalization of marijuana, medical marijuana awareness

Peterborough's annual 420 Cannabis Awareness Event has come quite a ways since it started six years ago.

"It was more of a full protest in the beginning, but now it's more like an event," said organizer Wayne Matheson at Victoria Park on Monday.

Since Matheson and his fiancee started the event in 2010, they now have 13 volunteers, get insurance and permission to use the property and also rent a few portable toilets.
