Methadone Clinic Slated for Port Hope PORT HOPE -- Treatment and harm reduction are both goals of methadone treatment programs run by the Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres, including one coming to Port Hope, according to its website. The website says methadone treatment programs help stabilize the lives of people who are dependent on opiates and reduce the harm related to drug use. The firm runs 36 methadone clinics in Ontario and will operate the clinic slated to open in Port Hope's Pine View Plaza on Toronto Road. It opened its first clinic in the GTA in 1995. Conservatives Tough On Crime: Minister Of Justice COBOURG -- It's not every day area police services and community representatives can air their concerns and hopes for Canada's criminal justice system with the country's top elected official within the justice portfolio, said Cobourg's police chief. Chief Paul Sweet, and representatives from the Port Hope Police Service and Northumberland OPP, along with community stakeholders met with Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock at the Cobourg police station, on Feb. 17. The roundtable discussion provided Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Norlock an opportunity to share the federal government's plans to tighten up the Criminal Code and help make it easier for police to intercept criminals who use the Internet to perpetuate their illegal activities. PORT HOPE - Those who carve out their livelihood in Port Hope's illegal drug trade better be watching their backs, says Port Hope's police chief. Since early spring, Port Hope Police Constable Mike Powell has been assigned to the Kawartha Combined Forces Drug Unit, which includes officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Cobourg Police Service and the Peterborough Lakefield Police Service, says Chief Ron Hoath. The squad's sole focus is cracking down on drugs and the people who sell them. Like every other community across the country, Port Hope has its share of drug dealers. 'I Do Not Support Police Officers Acting As Judge And Jury' NORTHUMBERLAND - It's business as usual for enforcement of pot possession laws in Northumberland County. Whether any charges make it to court, however, is a wait-and-see proposition. Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are treating possession of marijuana under 30 grams as enforceable under existing laws until directed to do otherwise by the federal crown, said OPP Senior Constable Jamie Stone.
