Regulations as to where cannabis can be used are needed, officials say With the upcoming legalization of cannabis, Yarmouth's recreation director, Frank Grant, has big concerns. "One of the things that we have concerns of with legalized cannabis is how it's going to be used on the street, in our parks, in our sports fields, in our parking lots or outside gymnasiums or halls," he said. Another layer of security to keep drugs out of Nova Scotia's correctional facilities came into effect on Oct. 21 at four facilities across the province, including the Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Yarmouth. The Ion scanners detect trace amounts of drugs and explosives. Four of the scanners have been placed according to need throughout the province. Two are at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside, one at the Cape Breton Correctional Facility in Sydney, and the other is in Yarmouth. [continues 126 words]
Knives, Drugs, Poking Others With A Needle A student in Cape Sable Island was suspended in June for threatening another student with comments including "bring(ing) a knife to school to kill her, to smash the daylights out of her, and to choke her." According to the Tri-County Regional School Board's (TCRSB) student suspension report for June 2008, it was the second suspension this year for the student who, this time, was sent home for five days. The Yarmouth town RCMP detachment says it is heightening its efforts when it comes to putting a dent in street-level drug activity. Over the past week or so, the detachment has carried out three drug seizures resulting in the confiscation of about 100 grams of marijuana, worth about $2,000. "I know a lot of the time people think of the big players but there are also a lot of street-level fellows who are doing this to maintain their income," says Constable Craig Smith of the town detachment's general investigation section (GIS). "Taking that $2,000 out of their hands does make a dent in it because obviously they're trying to sell it and turn a profit." [continues 100 words]
