LUMBERTON - Richard Moore has spent the last seven years looking after employees' retirement plans as the state treasurer. On Thursday, Moore gave a pep talk in Lumberton to agencies in the business of securing the futures of young people by steering them away from substance abuse. "There are no two things that are more important than combating drugs and helping our children," Moore told about 400 people who were attending the 10th annual Red Ribbon Luncheon at the Southeastern N.C. ST. PAULS - Lawmen uprooted more than 250 marijuana plants in woods near St. Pauls on Tuesday. They were to be destroyed later that night. No one has been arrested. Sheriff's Lt. C.T. Strickland said the plants have an estimated street value of $100,000. Most of the plants were found in some woods, though some of the plants were located behind residences. The plants ranged in height from 2 to 12 feet tall, said Strickland, head of the Sheriff's Office's Drug Enforcement Division. [continues 161 words]
LUMBERTON - Several sheriff's deputies will soon be rewarded with a new ride for their diligence in fighting drug crimes. The Robeson County Sheriff's Office recently received a check for $437,006.75 that comes from drug seizures. Most of the money will be used to purchase new patrol vehicles. Sheriff Glenn Maynor said that more than half of the office's cars have between120,000 and 160,000 miles. The Sheriff's Office has 104 patrol vehicles, eight of which are used by Robeson County jail personnel. [continues 423 words]
