A major drug operation based out of Red Deer, but implemented throughout several central Alberta communities, has been halted.

The Red Deer RCMP Subdivision Drug Section, in collaboration with the RCMP Red Deer City Street Team, Olds Detachment, Three Hills Detachment, Didsbury Detachment, Sundre Detachment and Lacombe Police Services, announced that they had concluded a long term intensive drug investigation, which targeted several area drug traffickers in Red Deer and surrounding communities.

Approximately $90,000 worth of drugs were seized through police under-cover purchases and the execution of eight search warrants at private residences.

Learning how to say 'no' is a very important skill that every kid has to learn, at some time or another.

That's why the D.A.R.E. program is such an important tool. The program is invaluable as it educates the youngsters about the pressures and temptations of drugs and alcohol, which they'll learn about sooner or later. Preferably sooner.

The Deer Meadow Middle School here in Olds, puts their grade six students through a mandatory nine week program, where the kids learn all about the disturbing world of drugs and alcohol. Educating these kids about these issues is the only way that they'll be able to make an informed decision.

Illegal drugs is an issue that affects everybody, and the only way to prevent people from walking across that destructive tight-rope, is through eduction, communication, and awareness.

Since illegal drugs are unfortunately everywhere these days, tackling this issue is obviously a very difficult task. Ridding the streets of drugs is only going to happen through hard work, and awareness.

"I think this is not something that can happen overnight," said Sergeant Bob Phillips of the Olds RCMP. "This is a social problem. It's more than a policing problem. It's a society problem."
