Porter County substance abuse agencies could be getting some grant funding early this year. If the auditor's office can print checks early, the Porter County Substance Abuse Council may disperse $168,849,60 to 34 organizations and police departments to work on substance abuse problems at its Sept. 13 meeting, Sharon Cawood of the Substance Abuse Council said. Usually, the Substance Abuse Council does it in October, the end of the fiscal year. PORTER TWP. -- People will have a chance to voice their comments on possible drug testing of students in the Porter Township School Corp. during a meeting Monday night. A public round-table discussion will be held at Boone Grove High School on drug education and testing students for drugs. The school district wants to gauge public sentiment before beginning a policy, Superintendent Nick Brown said. "It has the potential to be a controversial topic," he said.
