Editor, Daily News: What war on drugs? While the United States gifted Mexico $500 million and Central America an additional $50 million to help eradicate drug production (Daily News, April 30), our Marines in Afghanistan were told to "ignore" the vast poppy fields they walk through. The United Nations estimates the Taliban militants earn up to $100 million from the drug trade. Afghanistan supplies 9.3 percent of the world's opium used to make heroin. This just adds to the insanity of this war where U.S. tax dollars pay tribute to primitive tribal warlords, who own the product of the poppy, to ensure they don't kill our soldiers.
