Just three weeks ago, a Rock Island County coalition named CAUSE organized a prescription drug take-back event. About 438 pounds of the drugs were collected on April 26 at three sites: Milan, Rock Island and Silvis, according to Tammy Muerhoff, superintendent of the Rock Island County Regional Office of Education in Moline. Muerhoff and her staff are in CAUSE, the Coalition Advocating for Underage Substance Elimination. An administrative review has exonerated three Rock Island police officers after an early October incident when one of them was shot in the ankle while running down an alleged drug dealer, Rock Island Police Chief John Wright said. Kevin Young, 39, of Rock Island, is being held on $1.5 million bond at the Rock Island County Jail. He is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and faces other felony charges. Three of the officers involved in the Oct. 7 incident were placed on leave while reasons for discharging their firearms were reviewed, Wright said, noting the review was standard procedure and "there were no accusations of misconduct on the part of the officers involved." Lynn Smith says she hopes that spreading the word about ecstasy use, will prevent people from going down the same road she did and save lives. The 26-year-old native of Danville, Pa., who survived continued use of the so-called "party" drug known as Ecstasy, spoke Tuesday night at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, urging students to spread the word about the hazards of such narcotics.
