Finding professional help for addiction and mental health issues should be a lot easier for Kinistino and Birch Hills teenagers come next school year.

At the May 22 Saskatchewan Rivers School Division board meeting, trustees approved a partnership with the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, which will see Kinistino and Birch Hills schools share a health counsellor for students in Grades 8-12.

John Kuzbik, superintendent of schools, said adding the counsellor to school staff means those rural students will have similar access to drug counselling as is available in Prince Albert.

City council is getting a lesson from local students about the potential benefits of a safe-injection site within Prince Albert.

Fourth-year nursing students at the First Nations University of Canada's Prince Albert campus will present their case in favour of a safe-injection site during tonight's city council meeting at City Hall.

Kali Chabot, nursing-student group-speaker, doesn't realistically expect council to approve their request for an injection site.

She said the goal of the presentation is to raise awareness and get councillors thinking about alternative solutions to intravenous drug-use related problems.

A Councillor's Concerns About Discarded Syringes Have Been Eased.

Ward 2 Councillor Greg Dionne shared his needle concerns with the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region board when it met Wednesday in the city.

Dionne told board members he supports the needle exchange program, but feels something must be done about all the discarded syringes throughout the city.

Dionne said one resident found more than 20 syringes on his property.

"I've got all kinds of calls from residents," he said.

"The students are going to get the story the drug users and pushers in this town will never tell them," says drug and alcohol counsellor Paul Huycke.

How does this drug fighter plan to get through to your children?

"By being up front. I don't believe children are idiots, stupid or too young to understand. They have working brains, and will learn to say no to the scum making profits off their health."
