Stavely Town council passed a motion to amend a land-use bylaw to include medical marijuana production facilities in the industrial use. The motion was passed unanimously at the Stavely Town council meeting April 14, following a public hearing. Independent businessman Joel Manorek outlined the project that he plans to build in Stavely. The proposed medical marijuana production facility will be a large scale, hydroponic facility that would produce medical-grade marijuana for distribution to approved users. When the facility is operating at full capacity, it would employ 20-25 people, mostly for horticultural positions that would be trainable positions. [continues 485 words]
Deaths Caused by Killer Chemical Autopsy results on a man who died Jan. 22 from an apparent drug overdose could take two to four months. RCMP spokesman Sgt. Patrick Webb said that although many people think that ecstasy or tainted ecstasy was responsible for the death of Brandon Bodkin, 23, as well as several other people in the Calgary area in the past two months, police don't think that's the case. "They're dying from PMMA (paramethoxymeth-amphetamine), not from ecstasy," said Webb. "We have people who suffer from ecstasy overdoses all the time. When you have PMMA, it will kill you. A Nanton man is facing charges for a local marijuana grow operation following a fire at his residence. The 49-year-old man has been charged with arson by negligence following the fire for failing to contact emergency response departments as soon as possible after determining there was a fire. Nanton RCMP and fire department members had discovered a marijuana grow operation in the house after responding to the house fire Oct. 27. The man was also charged in possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and a firearms offence. Nanton RCMP Corporal Dave Friend says that nine marijuana plants were found at the residence, as well as "a small amount of finished product." The man will appear in court Dec. 14. Friend says that the entire inside of the house sustained water and smoke damage. [end]
