Kevin Hall has six days left to restore some of his lost dignity. The Ottawa police officer has been found in violation of the basic standards expected under the Police Services Act. He was found guilty of the breach after a hearing that detailed his theft and use of crack cocaine. The hearing also revealed that Const. Hall lied about the extent of his prior use of marijuana on his application to become a police officer. He claimed that his addiction was a disability. But lying is not a disability. It is a character flaw that cannot be tolerated in a person who is sworn to uphold public safety. If the damage were limited to him, it would be bad enough, but the Ottawa police have been forced to drop charges in one case that Const. Hall had investigated. They say no others will have to be overturned. The Ottawa police are lucky; Toronto's force has been in turmoil over the alleged actions of some members of its drug squad. After a week, if Const. Hall doesn't quit, he will be dismissed. He can appeal the ruling. If he does he will remain on the payroll until the appeal is heard. That would offend the community. He should do the right thing and resign today. - --- MAP posted-by: Richard Lake
