MAP Editor in Training (EIT) MAP
Typical DoD Session

Wow, that was a lot of verbage to describe all the pieces and parts or our most awesome DoD app. I promise, though, after using it once or twice it is very quick and easy.

Let's say you have 30 minutes or so to process some articles, here's the few steps you would follow:
1) Check the articles you'd like to process
2) Select your name from the Select Editor Pull Down List
3) Click the Send button
4) Process the articles as they land in your email

You will be using live data for this lab but we will track it very closely to ensure all goes well. Please let Jo-D (jo-d@mapinc.org) or Rich (rlake@mapinc.org) know you are about to begin this lesson.

For this lab you need to have the instructions handy while working through them. There are at least two ways to do this.

  • Print out this page and read through it while you work the exercise
  • Work with two browser windows. One with the instructions and one with the DoD.
Copy the DoD url (shown below) into a new browser window:
http://www.mapinc.org/scgi/postings_raw.pl

Type your username and password at the prompt window to enter our DoD screen.

Here's the lab instructions:

1) Check the articles you'd like to process
- For this exercise, you will choose one Known Source Article
- Scan through the available articles and click the checkbox of one which has type K
2) Select your name from the Select Editor Pull Down List
- Click the Select Editor Pulldown to view editors currently on duty
- Click on your name to select yourself as receiving editor
- Your screen should look similar to the one shown below:
3) Click the Send button
- The selected article is processed by roboeditor and sent to your email address within minutes (usually seconds!)
4) Process the article when it lands in your email
- Format the article according to the previous lessons
- Send the formatted article to mapnews@mapinc.org
- Send a msg to Jo-D or Rich to let them know you have completed this lab!
That's it! Once you get the OK on the previous post you can proceed with as many or little articles as you have time for. When you have spare moments, pull up the DoD and click around a bit to get the feel of its sorting and such.

Please always keep in mind this manual just covered the basics. Even our most experienced editors, including myself, still run into questions and challenges. ANYTIME you are not sure how to process something or have any questions at all - just send a message to stafftalk@mapinc.org.

THANK YOU!
